Assembly hosted by Aston Uridge and Olivia Fletcher
This term, 3/4 Gorman students have been combining history and maths in exciting ways. As part of their writing unit, the students have been working on historical recounts. Recently, they went on an excursion to the Darwin Oil Tunnels, where they learnt about the bombing of Darwin and Darwin’s role in World War II and how these tunnels were used to protect valuable fuel reserves from enemy air raids. The experience allowed students to step back in time and understand the historical significance of the tunnels, bringing their writing to life with vivid detail. They have been using this experience to practice writing recounts, focusing on organising information and using topic-specific vocabulary.
In maths, the students have been busy calculating change in practical, real-life scenarios. Using subtraction and addition strategies, they’ve been figuring out how much money they would get back after making a purchase, applying what they’ve learned to everyday situations.
Our class have been learning about time. Our focus is to recognise the quarter to the hour time. As a fun activity we talked about how time was used before the clock was invented. People used a sundial to tell the time, our class enjoyed making them and they were very curious how the sun was able to give the right time.
What a fabulous Term to look back on in Preschool!! It has been a busy and fun term while learning together. We held our Art Show to display all the beautiful artwork we have been making in Preschool. We had our Book Parade where we got to dress up as our favourite characters. We had our Fathers Day Stall where students were able to purchase gifts for their Dads, Grandpas or someone special in their life. Groups 1 and 3 went to the fortnightly assemblies where they saw class performances and students get awards for all their wonderful learning. The Preschool Teachers held the Election day BBQ with some great volunteers that helped us out throughout the day. We participated in the Nursery Rhyme Olympics. We had our first ever Preschool disco at the Hall which was so much fun! We couldn’t have done this Term without you! Thank you for all of your support with our Preschool fundraising events this Term. The funds that we raised from our Art Spectacular and BBQ have gone towards the purchase of new Literacy and Numeracy resources and Art materials. We hope you have a safe and relaxing holiday and can’t wait to see you again in Preschool in Term 4!
The Kitchen Garden Team would like to congratulate the Sustainability Squad on an amazing term. The students have shown commitment, responsibility and care for their school and the environment.
Sustainability Squad students attend meetings at recess on a Tuesday. By attending meetings, students are given the opportunity to attend fortnightly learning opportunities in the kitchen and garden where they have been involved in tasks that encourage sustainability. This has included making homemade paper, candles, melted plastic lid keychains and making preserves with school garden produce such as rosella jam and herb salts. Sustainability Squad students can be found selling these lovely products before assemblies to help raise money for the school Kitchen and Garden Program.
Sustainability Squad students have also attended incursions and excursions this term. Landcare NT visited the school and presented a Biodiversity Education Program. Sustainability Squad students attended the flora session and will attend the fauna session next term. It was amazing to learn more about the native plants of the Northern Territory. A highlight for the children was viewing plants under a special microscope.
We ended the term with a wonderful excursion to Girraween Primary School to attend their Sustainability Field Day. It was a lovely opportunity to connect with other schools and share wonderful learning experiences. The Sustainability Squad sold many of the products they have been making and raised $567 for the Kitchen and Garden Program. Well done and thank you Sustainability Squad for representing Zuccoli Primary School with pride.

Unity in Auslan – Celebrating International Week of People at Zuccoli Primary School
In its second year of learning Auslan as a language, Zuccoli Primary School held its first ‘Unity in Auslan – International Week of Deaf People celebration’. Zuccoli Year 5 and 6 students, Year 4 Bakewell Primary School, Darwin Languages School staff and Deaf community members came together to recognise and engage in activities using Auslan.
Students enjoyed games with Auslan fingerspelling, sign recognition and collaborative challenges using Auslan.
Special thanks to our invited guests, Zoe Saliba from Darwin Language School, Brenda and Greg Leeson Deaf Community members.
